Lemnos is an island with a long tradition in cheese production, and its unique cheeses are famous both in Greece and internationally.

The feta cheese of Lemnos has a unique flavour and character. Kalathaki is also a unique cheese produced in Lemnos, made from sheep’s milk and taking its name from the small baskets used in the production that leave characteristic imprints on the cheese. Melichloro is another sheep’s milk cheese that is dried and can be preserved for months. Melichloro is ideal for grating and for making the traditional Saganaki. Finally, Kaskavali (or Kashkaval) is one of the oldest products of Lemnos, a cheese with a distinct flavour produced since the Middle Ages.
